Wow, it's been a while since I've visited here and written anything! What can I say? I've been busy, or is it lazy? Either way, the days seem to have passed by in a hurry.
I'm on holidays from work now, 'til the 25th. On Saturday a friend, her 2 kids and I went to The Mortlach Saskatoon Berry festival. It was fun. Lots of people there. They sure put on a nice event for such a small town. We missed the parade by just a few minutes. There was face painting, a petting zoo, many vendors selling a very wide variety of goods (jewelry, household, clothing, food, etc) This is the first time I've attended, usually I'm working on that Saturday. I bought some locally produced honey, 3 pairs of bamboo snow-dyed socks, some dark chocolate covered sour cherries (also local) and some muffins (Mine are better, sorry to the chef.) It was a very hot day, temps lately are in the low 30's, Saturday was no exception. Sure glad for air-conditioning in the car. We took the grid roads back to town. I showed Theresa some areas where we hike and go Saskatoon picking. And then Saturday evening, hubby and I went to The Webster's and hung out with them on their deck. It was a great 1st day of my holidays.
So this is my 3rd day off and I don't really know what I'm going to get accomplished today. I know there's always housework, but I really don't feel like doing that. I could haul out my easel and paint, but even that sounds like too much work too. I will probably end up outside tending to my 'Greens'. I did plant flowers this year. OMG, you can practically see them growing, some are very large already. My sunflowers are taller than me.The tomatoes are walnut size and lots of them. Buster-Boo has now decided that the entire yard is his toilet, so I must be careful when I'm doing work out there! He used to only go in one area, but ever since the raccoon has been around, I guess he feels the need to mark the entire yard. Mostly all was planted in containers, which in this hot weather must be watered twice a day, so that takes a half hour each time. Dead-heading alone takes 10-15 minutes, but it so worth it if you want those blooms to keep coming. My gourd plants are quite small, not sure if I'll get a crop from those. There are lots of male flowers on the pumpkin, but no female ones yet. Soon, I hope, our summer's going by way to quickly!
And I guess if I'm going to get this work done, I'd best get at it before it gets too hot. Supposed to be 31 Celsius this afternoon. I'll take a few photos for my next post.

What a beautiful day it is today! I'll have to get out and get a bit of yard work done.
I've already raked and tidied in the backyard, now to tackle the front. That is a lot bigger and definitely will take a while to finish. Not that it's a horrible mess or anything, mainly pine cones and branches to be picked up, no garbage. And a bizillion ends of the pine boughs. Seems it's a favorite food of squirrels. They eat what they want and throw the rest of the branch on the ground for me to pick up. And I haven't picked them up all winter!
I also want to rake the leaves around my neighbors lilac bushes. I put them on top of the soil in my planters. It is an excellent mulch! It keeps the moisture in the planter and when I water them, the soil does not splash up and wash away.
My composter needs attention too, haven't been able to turn it 'cause it was frozen solid all winter. We didn't 'harvest' anything from it last year, it's pretty full! We get the best dirt from that, the plants absolutely LOVE it!
I'm planting a lot of flowers this year. Last year, I was still mad about them ripping up our flowers, shrubs,  rock garden and pond, so I didn't do a damn thing in our yard last summer. I am getting tired of  it looking like that though, gotta do something about it. But it will be a lot of hard work involved. I have 3 huge piles of  BIG rocks in the yard that were once part of our rock garden. Now I have to move them back. I'm not making the same garden again, I will make something different. And we're not sure about the pond going back in or not.... I'm getting tired just thinking about it!
But I'd best get something done before it gets too late in the day. So 'til next time, have a great day!

There and back again...

Well, my trip to our nations capital was awesome. (I can say that now that I'm back all safe and sound.)
Some parts of the trip were stressful, as in the 'getting there and getting back part'.
I'm not very knowledgeable in the airport department. This was the first time I've flown.
First ya gotta practically strip down to your skivvies. Then the machine beeps when ya walk through, so ya gotta go back and remove your lace-up boots and get them x-rayed. (Along with all your belongings.) So then the machine beeps again when ya walk through and then the guard says you get randomly picked to 'swab'. (I'm thinking at this point about the comment my husband had made earlier about 'cavity searches'!!) Then the guard asks if I want a female to come and pat me down?
I said, " Whatever ya do.."....
Thankfully, a nice lady came over and wiped my hands and my purse with a piece of cloth on a BBQ lighter and said "Have a nice flight." and sent me on my way.
I was happy to go...
(Speaking of  going, do not, I repeat, do not use the bathroom on the airplane. I held it for so long, but eventually I had to use the facilities. Ooo, it was nasty! Small. Dirty. Icky. Gross. I will withhold liquids for a long time before my next flight.)
So now we all get on board, then we have 'ice on the wings', so have to de-ice. another 20 minutes go by... Finally, we get airborne and then Mr. Pilot says we're going to experience some turbulence.
Oh lovely, feels like the plane is going to shake apart!!
I'm thinking of all those movies I've seen involving airplanes.....you know, the ones with only 2 survivors and I'm not one of them...
But after a while, it did improve and I could unclench my hands from the armrests. Looked out the window lots. I liked it better with no clouds.
And the transferring airplanes thing at Pearson was OK, but I'm sure glad I had a few minutes between flights to find where I was supposed to be going.
And after a harrowing taxi ride with a madman from the airport to the hotel, I finally checked in. That was a looong day, I was a wreck.
I Googled that swab thing when I got home to see what that was all about. HA, little did they know that I just hadn't shot my gun that day! LOL And I'm still not all that keen on air travel after only 4 different aircraft flights, but it sure is FAST in getting to where you're going, that's for sure!
Once I was there, all was well. Met some lovely people from all over Canada. The CTHRC treated us very well, nice accommodations, good food, tons of snacks, pop, juice, etc. Very accommodating for anything you needed. The office was 2 blocks away from Parliament Hill, 2 blocks away from the hotel too. Quick easy walk at 8:15 am. And I bet I saw 200-300 people in that short span! Wow, sure not used to that!! I felt kinda alone amongst so many....weird. Lots of traffic, tons of buses and taxis too. The buildings are so big, many old ones made from big blocks of stone.
I visited the Royal Canadian Mint. Was 5 minutes too late for a tour of the facility, but visited the boutique. Bought a 25 cent Sasquatch coin and a 50 cent coin with 2 pictures on it. You look one way, see a picture, tilt the coin and see a different picture. Of course this 25 and 50 cent coin cost a lot more than 25 and 50 cents! But these are a nice addition to my collection. I also held a 28 pound brick of gold. They have a guard posted by it at all times. It sure was heavy for the size of it! Very pretty and shiny too. I liked it! HaHa!
I found a Geo-cache in Confederation Park, so I logged one in another province! Yay!! I left a Saskatchewan pin behind for some lucky person to find. I looked for another cache, but it was dark and raining and I was getting wet, so I didn't find it before I left.
Had a good meal at a really cool restaurant. One in our group had a seafood pizza. It came with a pile of cooked mussels in the middle of it. Still in their shells! That looked so cool!
I had a pasta with tomato sauce, it was very good. Huge portion, I barely made a dent in it before I was full. Johnny Farina's if you Google it.
And speaking of food, I'm hungry now. So 'til next time!...

Denise's Grand Adventure

Well the 6th of March is here already. And today I leave for Ottawa. I am excited and nervous too. Never been on a big plane before. Never been to such a big city before. I don't know a single person there either. I sometimes wonder "why did I even sign up for this?"  But I do hope I have a ton of fun and experience some new things and see some new places. There are a few geo-caches around the hotel, so I hope to log a few, my first ones outside of Saskatchewan.
Short blog today, I must triple check my list and make sure I have all I need. And I'm gone in a half hours time.  Hopefully, I'll have a bunch of photos to share later this week. Wish me luck!!  :-)

Family Day

Well Happy family Day Everyone! It's a statutory holiday here in SK. Day off for a lot of people, time and a half wages for the rest. Most stores and restaurants are open for business, government offices are closed. There is a paid holiday in each month now. 'Lizabeth was saying they had 9 days off school now (for the 1 day the rest of us get.) Good thing Terri is a stay at home Mom.
I am doing the laundry thing right now. Well, I should say the machine is washing my clothes, not like I'm rubbing them on a rock in the creek or anything!! But still takes time, and must be done at least once a week. Husband is heading to the grocery store to pick up a few things.
Then later, Husband and I are going to the MIL's for a visit with her and SIL & BIL from the Queen City who are in town for the day. That's Family Day.
I painted a bit last night. In the GS, we have these plaques that say, 'Family' on them. The 'amily' part is painted a dark brown, the 'F' is the same color as the background. From a distance, they look quite odd. So anyways, Boss Lady asked if I could somehow fix one up a bit. So last night, I painted it, so now it looks like it says 'Family' on it. If it sells,  I will do the other 6 we have in stock and hope they all sell!
We had 3 cast iron bird doorstops that were just plain brown. No-one bought them for a long time. I finally convinced  Boss Lady to let me take one home, paint it up a bit, bring it back and see if it would sell. It did and not too long after I brought it back too! One was a robin, one a thrush and the other was some kind of fat bird I don't really know what kind. We have none left anyways. That's the goal.
Now that I'm thinking of this, we have 2 cast iron horses that have been in the GS a long time, maybe after I finish the plaques, I'll do those. Good idea!
I hope you have a great day and the sun is shining in your world!

Off to Ottawa next month!

Well, trip is confirmed, ticket is purchased, it will be a fun adventure for me. Something definitely outside my comfort zone! I'm sure all will be well, but I'm still kinda nervous about it.
The wonderful weather is continuing, sunny days, you can finally feel the heat of the sun. Love it! Spring has always been my favorite time of year! Soon we will see the geese flying north again and the birds will return. The trees and plants will grow green again. Flowers will bloom, baby birds and animals will be born. Renewal...nice.
After winter, everything just looks a dull brown. We had very little snow, in fact barely any snow all winter, although that could change any time. This will be known as the "Winter that never Was" if this keeps up! I like it! Is this what global warming is? I'll need another or two more winters like this before I'm convinced, but....hhmmm?
Maybe this year I'll put the pond back in the yard, we will see...
Gotta fly for now, suppertime isn't going to cook itself. Guess I need to be there. :-)

Something new for me.

Hello!
Again we are blessed with yet another gorgeous sun-shiny day! This is awesome and can SO keep right up 'til spring time! The weather predicting gopher last week said that winter was over, I think she was right! This is great! After the winter last year with a ton of snow and cold cold cold, this is a refreshing change! Bring it on!!

I got some exciting news last week.
Well, exciting to me anyways.

I lead a quiet, one might say boring life.
Fine by me, that's just the way I like it, suits me well.
I work at the 'zeum every day.
I talk to folks, take their admissions, work in the gift-shop, clean, make coffee, answer the phone, what-ever needs to be done really. With a small staff and a small budget, you sometimes have to step outside your basic job description.
I have fun there and really do have the best job in the world!

And when I'm not working
I can usually be found at home
at the grocery store
at a friends
at my Moms
or
out hiking somewhere out in the middle of no-where geocaching.

In other words, I'm pretty predictable.

Since starting work at the 'zeum  almost 4 years ago, I have taken 2 different training courses. The first was a TVIC, a tourist visitor information counselor.
Makes sense to me, we are tourist destination.
And I see and talk to tourists every day.
O.K.
The 2nd was a retail sales associate.
Again, makes sense, we have a gift shop and that's a big part of my job too.
O.K.
These courses are a nation wide standard applied to over 50 different occupations
One must take training, write an exam, serve a minimum number of hours in the job and have an evaluation done by a secret shopper.
Not a difficult thing to do for me. I enjoy learning new things.
I also have my certification in food and beverage service also, with over 20 years experience in that field before I started working at the 'zeum.
So last year, the panel that sets the standards for these courses contacted me. Asked if I would help in re-working the standards for retail sales associate to pertain to the currant job market. The currant standards were set in the early 90's.
I said I would participate in this.
They said a few hours of my time over the next year or so.
Sure, no problem.
So I had a few phone calls, answered a few e-mails, had a conference call with a bunch of other people while on the computer at the same time, had a few more phone calls...
And since I haven't heard back from them since November, I kinda forgot about it.
Thought my part in this was finished.
So now I get an e-mail from them asking me to participate in a focus group to review the new workbook and have a voice in editing the final draft.

In Ottawa.
March 7-9th

Flight and accommodation paid for.

OMG

Yesterday, today, tomorrow...

Hello again! After having an awful start to my week, I'm finally feeling like myself again. I sometimes I have too much stress in my life. My body's way of dealing with it is to give me a 2 day migraine. Not fun at all. My 20$ pills didn't even help this time, usually they do the trick right away. Oh well, feel good now, that's what's important.
Our weather predicting gopher says that spring will be arriving early this year. Yeah, right, we haven't even had winter yet! If this keeps up, this will be known as the winter that never happened! We had a week of cold back in November and a week of cold just a few weeks ago, otherwise temps have been around the 0 mark or higher! Sunday is supposed to get up to 8 degrees, on the plus side too!! That is so strange! I just hope there are no big 'surprises' ahead of us, like a July blizzard or something!
Our head office is setting up a new site on the web for us. All staff have a hand in editing it, so I got a sneak peek at it yesterday. It is so cool, lots of photos and information on there. I'll post the address when It's up and going. Christine is doing a fabulous job of creating it!
Husband went for an eye exam the other day. Now he's on a list waiting for cataract surgery. Doctor said about a 6 month wait. So we wait.... Mom had her eyes done last fall. After wearing glasses since she was 9 years old, now she doesn't need them anymore. Wonderful stuff this procedure!
Short post today, time to shower and get myself off to work. Hope you all have a great day!
'Til next time.......

Never did get those photos posted.
Now the containers are gone. Oh, well...
It feels like winter's finally arrived. After basking in the balmy temperatures that were above 10 degrees Celsius a few weeks ago (and knowing that it would end sooner or later), it has been a real drag dealing with this minus 35 stuff! It has been cold this past week or so. Wimpy me!! I don't like cold a great deal, kinda hibernate in the winter months. Much like a bear, Ha Ha!
I picked up my paintbrush again, see if I can paint a few masterpieces. I'm painting a canvas bag that I started a few years ago. It will have a different landscape scene on each side when I'm finished. One side's done, other is about 3/4 done. After using oils, acrylic takes a bit of getting used to. I think my pics look OK, I'm happy with them.
Homemade beef barley soup for supper tonight. Yummm! And No Sodium either, big bonus in my world! Homemade seems to be the only way to go these days.
I  do miss those high sodium fat filled Big Macs though...

Dog cookie day!

Today I am decorating some containers of dog cookie mix. At Christmas, our local SPCA had a 'Mew-tique' at the mall. They were accepting donations of things to sell to raise money. I have an awesome recipe that is so easy and cheap to make and tasty too. (Just ask Buster-Boo) So I layered the dry ingredients in a jar and added a few ribbons and doo-dads and voila, a cute gift for a dog-owner. They sold out of them right away. Now I am making some to take to the Shelter and they can sell them there. I have 12, all decorated differently. I have a lot more Christmas supplies than anything else so I'm using a few things that have been here awhile. So accomplishing 2 things, good for me!! I will post a few photos later.
Gotta fly, gun's plugged in waiting for me!
