Family Day

Well Happy family Day Everyone! It's a statutory holiday here in SK. Day off for a lot of people, time and a half wages for the rest. Most stores and restaurants are open for business, government offices are closed. There is a paid holiday in each month now. 'Lizabeth was saying they had 9 days off school now (for the 1 day the rest of us get.) Good thing Terri is a stay at home Mom.
I am doing the laundry thing right now. Well, I should say the machine is washing my clothes, not like I'm rubbing them on a rock in the creek or anything!! But still takes time, and must be done at least once a week. Husband is heading to the grocery store to pick up a few things.
Then later, Husband and I are going to the MIL's for a visit with her and SIL & BIL from the Queen City who are in town for the day. That's Family Day.
I painted a bit last night. In the GS, we have these plaques that say, 'Family' on them. The 'amily' part is painted a dark brown, the 'F' is the same color as the background. From a distance, they look quite odd. So anyways, Boss Lady asked if I could somehow fix one up a bit. So last night, I painted it, so now it looks like it says 'Family' on it. If it sells,  I will do the other 6 we have in stock and hope they all sell!
We had 3 cast iron bird doorstops that were just plain brown. No-one bought them for a long time. I finally convinced  Boss Lady to let me take one home, paint it up a bit, bring it back and see if it would sell. It did and not too long after I brought it back too! One was a robin, one a thrush and the other was some kind of fat bird I don't really know what kind. We have none left anyways. That's the goal.
Now that I'm thinking of this, we have 2 cast iron horses that have been in the GS a long time, maybe after I finish the plaques, I'll do those. Good idea!
I hope you have a great day and the sun is shining in your world!

Off to Ottawa next month!

Well, trip is confirmed, ticket is purchased, it will be a fun adventure for me. Something definitely outside my comfort zone! I'm sure all will be well, but I'm still kinda nervous about it.
The wonderful weather is continuing, sunny days, you can finally feel the heat of the sun. Love it! Spring has always been my favorite time of year! Soon we will see the geese flying north again and the birds will return. The trees and plants will grow green again. Flowers will bloom, baby birds and animals will be born. Renewal...nice.
After winter, everything just looks a dull brown. We had very little snow, in fact barely any snow all winter, although that could change any time. This will be known as the "Winter that never Was" if this keeps up! I like it! Is this what global warming is? I'll need another or two more winters like this before I'm convinced, but....hhmmm?
Maybe this year I'll put the pond back in the yard, we will see...
Gotta fly for now, suppertime isn't going to cook itself. Guess I need to be there. :-)

Something new for me.

Hello!
Again we are blessed with yet another gorgeous sun-shiny day! This is awesome and can SO keep right up 'til spring time! The weather predicting gopher last week said that winter was over, I think she was right! This is great! After the winter last year with a ton of snow and cold cold cold, this is a refreshing change! Bring it on!!

I got some exciting news last week.
Well, exciting to me anyways.

I lead a quiet, one might say boring life.
Fine by me, that's just the way I like it, suits me well.
I work at the 'zeum every day.
I talk to folks, take their admissions, work in the gift-shop, clean, make coffee, answer the phone, what-ever needs to be done really. With a small staff and a small budget, you sometimes have to step outside your basic job description.
I have fun there and really do have the best job in the world!

And when I'm not working
I can usually be found at home
at the grocery store
at a friends
at my Moms
or
out hiking somewhere out in the middle of no-where geocaching.

In other words, I'm pretty predictable.

Since starting work at the 'zeum  almost 4 years ago, I have taken 2 different training courses. The first was a TVIC, a tourist visitor information counselor.
Makes sense to me, we are tourist destination.
And I see and talk to tourists every day.
O.K.
The 2nd was a retail sales associate.
Again, makes sense, we have a gift shop and that's a big part of my job too.
O.K.
These courses are a nation wide standard applied to over 50 different occupations
One must take training, write an exam, serve a minimum number of hours in the job and have an evaluation done by a secret shopper.
Not a difficult thing to do for me. I enjoy learning new things.
I also have my certification in food and beverage service also, with over 20 years experience in that field before I started working at the 'zeum.
So last year, the panel that sets the standards for these courses contacted me. Asked if I would help in re-working the standards for retail sales associate to pertain to the currant job market. The currant standards were set in the early 90's.
I said I would participate in this.
They said a few hours of my time over the next year or so.
Sure, no problem.
So I had a few phone calls, answered a few e-mails, had a conference call with a bunch of other people while on the computer at the same time, had a few more phone calls...
And since I haven't heard back from them since November, I kinda forgot about it.
Thought my part in this was finished.
So now I get an e-mail from them asking me to participate in a focus group to review the new workbook and have a voice in editing the final draft.

In Ottawa.
March 7-9th

Flight and accommodation paid for.

Yesterday, today, tomorrow...

Hello again! After having an awful start to my week, I'm finally feeling like myself again. I sometimes I have too much stress in my life. My body's way of dealing with it is to give me a 2 day migraine. Not fun at all. My 20$ pills didn't even help this time, usually they do the trick right away. Oh well, feel good now, that's what's important.
Our weather predicting gopher says that spring will be arriving early this year. Yeah, right, we haven't even had winter yet! If this keeps up, this will be known as the winter that never happened! We had a week of cold back in November and a week of cold just a few weeks ago, otherwise temps have been around the 0 mark or higher! Sunday is supposed to get up to 8 degrees, on the plus side too!! That is so strange! I just hope there are no big 'surprises' ahead of us, like a July blizzard or something!
Our head office is setting up a new site on the web for us. All staff have a hand in editing it, so I got a sneak peek at it yesterday. It is so cool, lots of photos and information on there. I'll post the address when It's up and going. Christine is doing a fabulous job of creating it!
Husband went for an eye exam the other day. Now he's on a list waiting for cataract surgery. Doctor said about a 6 month wait. So we wait.... Mom had her eyes done last fall. After wearing glasses since she was 9 years old, now she doesn't need them anymore. Wonderful stuff this procedure!
Short post today, time to shower and get myself off to work. Hope you all have a great day!
'Til next time.......
